Rock Glow is a site devoted to collecting fluorescent minerals. Some minerals, when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, give off visible light or fluoresce. Glowing with amazing patterns and aesthetic color combinations, they are fun to find and collect.
Mankind has always been attracted to luminescent objects. In the past, natural phenomena like a star lit sky, glowing embers, lightening, a candle’s flame, and a fire fly’s glow, have all evoked an almost mystical attraction.
Today, modern man has a plethora of electronic devices who’s glow has supplanted those natural ones of the past. Most of these devices use a fluorescent light source. Much of our night time world is illuminated by the ubiquitous fluorescent lamp.
Collecting fluorescent minerals gets one out in nature at night. The luminescent attractions of the past and the wonders of the present merge when a stone cold rock, on fire with unearthly beauty, are held in one’s hand. It rekindles my childhood wonder.
